AVG Free and Avast Free are very good.

Norton is a resource Hogger

Zonealarm free or otherwise are resource hoggers

I have AVG and Avast on varying machines here and have NEVER had a virus get through them.

I know amongst some lan communites that they SWEAR by NOD32 which is a quite aggressive antivirus program....

It aint free tho.

Trend Micro Internet Security paid for allows you to use it on 3 computers though so it's not bad also monitors for any wireless connectivity to your pc, although I have in the past used AVG free which is good

I used mcafee complete version for a while, that monitors your wireless too, but again, a resource hogger. Wireless security is very easy to set up, as long as you have WPA set, you have the best form of security.

Yes got Wpa on but I had a problem once and have used Trend ever since, their online scanner Housecall is a good one if you have any problems

with the free anti virus do u have to pay after a certain time e.g after 12 months?

No, is always free...u may have to re-download the program every 12 months, and I think its avast that the free version does not AUTO update the av profile, but doing that manually is not a problem.
